Future Islands’ “As Long As You Are” is the sixth studio album from the Baltimore four-piece. Full of bright melodies and heavenly choruses, it is as euphoric and uninhibitedly joyful as anything the band have done in their 14-year career. Looking to both the past and future, the album confronts old ghosts and embraces new hope, it’s an album about trust, full of honesty, redemption and “letting go,” allowing old wounds to heal and bringing painful chapters to a close.

“As Long As You Are” signals a new era for the band, Future Islands’ landscapes of sound are more intricately detailed and their poetic angst has matured into something more subdued and dripping with acceptance. In a way, it feels like the band coming home to itself as drummer Mike Lowry officially joins as a full fledged member. Together, the four piece boast their brand of new-wave synth pop as joyful as anything they have done to date.
