Future Islands’s 2014 release, “Singles,” stands as their boldest and most immediate work to date. In fact, this is not a compilation of singles, but an entirely new album. The Baltimore trio consists of enigmatic frontman Sam Herring, bassist/guitarist William Cashion and keyboardist /guitarist / programmer Gerrit Welmers. Herring’s poetic tales of heartbreak, love and loss are finally up front and in high fidelity, thanks in part to a newfound creative partnership with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear).

“Singles” is the band’s fourth full-length album does not disappoint. It is pop music distilled, something Future Islands have been working at since their earliest lo-fi electro-punk records. An album that is experimental, yet hugely accessible, “Singles” is layered with songs that are faultlessly executed from top to bottom.
