Staring her musical career in 1990 in San Francisco, California, Liz Phair began by self-releasing her own audio cassettes under the name Girly Sound. After signing to Matador Records, she released her debut studio album in 1993, Exile in Guyville, which has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Since then she’s gone on to release several hugely successful works, including the Grammary Award nomiated Whip-Smart and Liz Phair (2003), which had a single peaking at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Phair’s sound combines elements of Indie Rock, Alternative Rock and Pop Rock, which have brought us her innovative and unselfconcious songwriting style. Initally singing in a more punky, monotone style in her earlier records, Liz Phair has transformed her vocals over the years into something more dynamic, with her guitar playing abilities following suit. Even now, her music serves as some kind of sanctified codex for girls, a map that guides through teenage life and into adulthood. With her truly carefree attitude, Phair displays her own brand of feminism through her music, embracing and trumpeting her girliness in contrast to the self-serious punks she grew up around, even when it required admitting to some “uncool” vulnerabilities.

The 25th Anniversary Box Set comes with 7 LP Vinyl Records, including Exile in Guyville remastered onto double LP and The Girly-Sound tapes (never officially released) remastered onto 5 LPs. Also included is a 44 page book with an extensive oral history by Jason Cohen featuring interviews with Liz, Brad Wood, Casey Rice, John Henderson, Nash Kato, Tae Won Yu nd more, as well as essays by Liz Phair and Ann Powers, never before published photos, and unseen artwork and ephemera.
