Legendary alt rock band Radiohead released their sixth studio album “Hail to the Thief” to critical acclaim in 2003. The album was seen as a return to their alternative sound while drawing elements from every every era of their career. The album has been described as having a more “swaggering” sound and a relaxed recording process, in contrast to previous tense sessions. At nearly an hour in length, the album is the band’s longest, with many of it’s songs within the two-to-three-minute range, shorter than the band’s average. Thom Yorke said he was inspired by Beatles songs of that length which he thought felt much longer. 

“Hail to the Thief” sees lead singer Thom York outright voicing various but seemingly thematic political and social opinions. The titled which alludes to George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential election victory and songs such as “2+2=5” and “We Suck Young Blood” draw from worldly controversies from the early 2000s era. Co-produced by Nigel Godrich and through brilliant musicianship, this album takes a more direct approach to the darker, more frenetic themes that previous works merely touched on.
