Born in Ireland in 1987, Joseph Michael “Shiny Joe” Ryan is an Australian psychedelic rock musician, singer and songwriter. Known as the mainstay multi-instrumentalist and guitarist of psych-rock band Pond, he’s also released two solo albums to date, and has been noted for doing the visuals for fellow Australian band Tame Impala.

Released in 2014, “The Cosmic Microwave Background” is a laidback release that takes a traditional journey through different genres and sonic textures. The sound is built on a foundation of wailing guitar lines and experimental instrumentation, with Ryan’s vocals happily sitting in the background. His label commented on it being a “heart-rending journey through interstellar innocence”, with the album’s title referring to the radiation and energy left behind by the Big Bang. Overall, the release is full to the brim with epic soundscapes, and a multitude of emotions ranging from nostalgia and love to loneliness and spiritual awe, a collection of sounds bound to get you in touch with your inner space-child.
